In a world where nearly all tentpole franchises are based on pre-existing properties, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim was a bit of an anomaly. While it drew inspiration from numerous giant monster and giant robot comic book, animated and film series, it was uniquely its own thing. So it was a bit disappointing when it looked like the planned sequel to the 2013 film was not going to materialize. Well, that disappointment goes away today as news comes that Pacific Rim 2 is moving out of development hell with a new director in the form of Steven S. DeKnight.
Deadline is reporting that DeKnight will be making his feature film debut with the project, working from the screenplay written by Jon Spaihts when Del Toro was developing the project.
Del Toro himself expressed approval over the choice last night on twitter.
Met w DeKnight and we are all so happy with our choice to take Pac Rim 2to where we know it can go!!

Now Pac Rim is a known property and we can expand big!

DeKnight is primarily known for his work in television. He produced and was head writer for the first season of Netflix’s Daredevil series. He has also written, directed and produced on the television Joss Whedon series Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel and Dollhouse as well as the Superman prequel series Smallville.
The film is being produced by Legendary Pictures. Glancing at their productions late, it looks as if they don’t have much in store for a 2017 release, so I would not be surprised to see the film slotted in there.
