Zorro may be riding back to the screens.
Gravity screenwriter Jonás Cuarón has been signed to both write and direct a new iteration of the swashbuckling hero to be simply titled Z. The film will produced by Lantica Media and Sobini Films with principal photography set to start this summer at Pinewood Dominican Republic Studios. The hope is to find a distributor later this month at Berlin’s European Film Market.
This isn’t the only attempt to bring the public domain hero the big screen. Currently, 20th Century Fox has a futuristic take on the hero being written by Glen Gers, Lee Shipman, and Brian McGeevy and titled Zorro Reborn with Gael Garcia Bernal attached. Sony has two potential Zorro films in development. One is reported to be a darker, grittier take on the hero while the other would be a crossover film with the titular western hero of Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained.
