When it was announced last week that Christopher McQuarrie would become the first director in the Mission: Impossible franchise to helm a second installment, many fans found themselves wondering if actress Rebecca Ferguson and her scene-stealing spy character Isla Faust would return as well.
Well, wonder no more, as Showbiz 411 is reporting that the actress will be returning for the upcoming Mission: Impossible 6, making her the first lead actress to return for a second film.
Mission: Impossible 6 is already moving towards production. Cruise announced that the film was happening even before the release of the fifth film, Rogue Nation, this past summer.
For a franchise that has never had a great track record with its female characters, Ferguson’s Isla was a breath of fresh air for the series. And bringing her back continues the franchise’s trend of building up a number of recurring characters, giving Tom Cruise’s Impossible Missions Force agent Ethan Hunt a supporting team which helps distinguish the franchise from some of those other solo spy movie series out there.
As of now, Mission: Impossible 6 is set to start filming next August, which means it may be Cruise’s next project after he completes his work on Universal’s The Mummy, which is set to start shooting early in the new year.
