Absolutely Fabulous is getting a little bit closer to actually making it to the big screen as Deadline reports that Fox Searchlight is in negotiations to co-produce and distribute a feature film continuation of the popular British sitcom.
The film will feature Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley reprising their roles as aging divas on the fringes of the high fashion industry who have never really accepted that the hard-partying days of their youth should have long been left in the past. Premiering in 1992, the show, created by Saunders, ran for six series and several specials spaced out over two decades. The series first screened in the US on Comedy Central.
According to Deadline, in addition to Saunders and Lumley, the rest of the show’s original cast will be returning for the film.
The Absolutely Fabulous film has been in development since at least as far back as 2011, when Saunders stated that she planned on having the screenplay start off with Patsy and Edina waking up hung over on a deserted millionaire’s yacht adrift in the middle of the ocean.
Absolutely Fabulous will begin filming in London this October with Mandie Fletcher, who directed several episodes of the television series, behind the camera.
