Not Much New In Leaked INDEPENDENCE DAY 2 Synopsis

IndependenceDayWhiteHouse

Although its storyline had been teased for a quite a while, actual hard information about the plot of the currently in production Independence Day 2 has been fairly scarce. We do know that it will take place in what director Roland Emmerich has called a “parallel history” in which humanity has used and adapted some of the technology left over from the defeated alien invaders from the first film, but that’s pretty much it.

With the annual Licensing Expo in Las Vegas coming up, we’re going to be hearing more about a number of upcoming projects, but the folks over at Collider got ahold of an an information sheet for a number of Fox shows and found the following synopsis for Independence Day 2

After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Not much new there that we didn’t know or could have inferred – Really? The aliens would be returning in the sequel? You don’t say! – but it is nice to see it confirmed in an almost official capacity. And while the original film was a popcorn a summer blockbuster as a film could be, and I mean that positively, I am wondering how deep Emmerich is going to dig into that world. There are a number of interesting questions to be explore. How strong is that spirit of peace and cooperation from the end of the film? Has there been a universal embrace of the idea to using the alien technology or do some people view the tech as a potential ticking time bomb? How has the culture impacted and changed in the aftermath of the invasion? How have the various religions of the world reacted?

We’ll maybe find out the answers to these questions when Independence Day 2 invades theaters on June 24, 2016.
