We might not know much of anything about its story, but we do know now that Blade Runner 2 is going to look amazing. Why is that? Well, because they’ve announced that Roger Deakins will be the cinematographer on the film.
Deakins’ participation was pretty much a given as Blade Runner 2 director Denis Villeneuve has collaborated with Deakins on his two previous films, Prisoners and the upcoming Sicario.
One of the top cinematographers working today, Deakins has brought a visual artistry to everything from his work with the Cohen Brothers to films like House Of Sand And Fog, Jarhead and Revolutionary Road. His work on the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall had people talking about a possible Academy Award nomination for his work, the first time in a very long while that the franchise would fuel such discussion.
Deakins will be following up on the work of Jordan Cronenweth, who worked with director Ridley Scott to create the iconic noir-ish future dystopia of the original Blade Runner. Production doesn’t get underway until next summer, so it will be a while before we get to see the fruits of his labors. But I don’t doubt that they will be stunning.
