Get ready for the return of Blue Steel!
Paramount Pictures has set a February 12, 2016 release date for Zoolander 2, the long in-development sequel to Ben Stiller’s 2001 comedy about airhead male model Derek Zoolander. The announcement came at Paris Fashion Week today with Stiller and co-star Owen Wilson walking the Valentino Fashion Show finale runway in character.
Variety managed to catch a portion of it in the Vine video below.
The sequel is co-written by Stiller and his Tropic Thunder collaborator Justin Theroux, with Theroux set to direct.
A return of Stiller’s Zoolander character is something I had been looking forward to for some time. The original film only grossed $60 million in its original release just a few weeks after 9/11, but over time has gathered for itself a sizeable cult following, so I can see why Stiller and Paramount would be interested in going back to this well. But I have to admit that after the lackluster Anchorman 2, I feel a little bit more gun shy about a follow up after so many years. Hopefully Stiller and Theroux will fare better.
