James Gunn Talks GUARDIANS Future

James Gunn has been making the rounds promoting tomorrow’s home video release of Guardians of the Galaxy, and, being that the film was a colossal success, Gunn was asked about Guardians of the Galaxy 2. And, boy, did he have a lot to say about it:
When did he come up with the idea for the sequel?

“I was sitting with Simon (Hatt, his assistant) in my trailer about halfway through shooting, and I was like ‘Here’s what the sequel is’… [laughs] and I made him sit down and start taking notes. That was really when, I think, the sequel started to come together. I think the next big leap was on the day the movie was released, I sat down and I wrote out all the basic, you know – story of what the sequel would be on August 1st. Those are the two moments where it started to come together.”

The sequel will be about change:

“Really, it’s just about walking forward in an elegant manner. When you go forward with a group of characters, that means you have to go forward. And going forward means you’re understanding these characters in a new way, you’re developing a new kind of story about their lives and who they are and where they’re going. And if you’re doing that, if you’re walking forward, then you can’t just repeat what you did before. That’s going backwards. That’s not understanding the character.

I mean, no knock against James Bond — I love James Bond movies, and the Sam Mendes one [“Skyfall”] is slightly outside of this, and “Casino Royale” is slightly outside of this — but basically, James Bond is a James Bond movie over and over and over again. The character never learns anything, and the character never does anything new. And that’s not a knock. It’s a really fun series. But that’s not what the Guardians are. The Guardians are going to continuously change.”

That the characters we know and love might be more or less loveable than we think:

“I think that some of the characters are probably worse than what we think they are, and other characters are better than what we think they are. It’s going to be interesting to learn a little bit about that as time goes on.”

That the characters we know and love might not all come back…or might be joined by new characters:

“Definitely. It’s not a concrete roster where those five people will always be the Guardians of the Galaxy. Some of those people can leave and do other things; other characters can join in and be new additions. Definitely it will not stay the same – into the next movie.”

That Marvel’s fan-favorite space-faring hero, Nova, will not make an appearance…yet:

“I don’t want Nova right now because I think Quill being the only earthling is important. That serves the entire movie going audience and not just the handful of Nova fans… I have nothing against Nova in future movies, but it doesn’t serve the movie right this moment.”

I think it’s important to say that Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is two and a half years away, set to be released in May 5, 2017. To have this much information about the film this far in advance is impressive.

And while Gunn states Nova will not be making an appearance in the film, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Nova Corps make an appearance. The character Nova was an earthling who received the powers of the Xandarian police force, the Nova Corps. And I think Gunn set up a super-powered Nova Corps at the end of GotG. We shall see.
