Kevin Smith Casts Johnny Depp In YOGA HOSERS

Kevin Smith’s creative renaissance continues as it is being announced today that Johnny Depp would be joining the cast of the writer/director’s upcoming comedy Yoga Hosers. Smith and Depp are making the project a family affair as both their daughters Lily-Rose Depp and Harley Quinn Smith will also be in the cast.

Like Smith’s “Jersey films,” Yoga Hosers is shaping up to be part of another group of interconnected titles, this one dubbed by Smith at Comic-Con last monthas his “True North Trilogy.” (Though given that his Jersey films started out as a trilogy and now number five, I wouldn’t be surprised if there wound up being more than three True North films when all is said and done.) The characters that the younger Depp and Smith will be playing in Yoga Hosers are the same ones they played in Tusk, Smith’s dark horror comedy due out later this year. You can see them as two Canadian convenient store clerks (sounds familiar) in the trailer to that film here.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film –

[C]enters on 15-year-old yoga nuts Colleen Collette (Lily-Rose Depp) and Colleen McKenzie (Harley Quinn Smith), who have an after-school job at a Manitoba convenience store called Eh-2-Zed. When an ancient evil rises from beneath Canada’s crust and threatens their big invitation to a Grade 12 party, the Colleens join forces with a legendary man-hunter from Montreal named Guy Lapointe (Depp) to fight for their lives with, according to the producers, “all seven Chakras, one Warrior Pose at a time.”

Smith explained that this film is going to be his “comic book movie.”

People always ask me ‘Are you ever going to make a comic book movie? This is it — but instead of yet another dude saving the day, our antiheroes are the most feared and formidable creatures man has ever encountered: two 15-year-old girls.

Strengthening up the connection between Yoga Hosers and Tusk is the fact that Smith has also brought back a majority of his Tusk cast for this new film including Michael Parks, Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Genesis Rodriguez, Ralph Garman and Harley Morenstein.

Production on the film begins this week, but there is no release date scheduled yet.

In the meantime, Smith has a number of other projects in development, including Clerks III, his Christmas-themed horror anthology Anti-Claus and the apocalypse comedy Helena Handbag.
