A Script Is Being Written For A FARSCAPE Movie

It is often the dream of fans and producers that a television series that has ended continues on in a series of films. Although that dream was recently achieved for Veronica Mars, there are numerous other franchises hoping for the chance. And now another popular series may be making that transition soon.

During WonderCon this weekend, creator and producer of the Sci-Fi Channel’s popular Farscape series announced that there was a screenplay being worked on to bring the series to the big screen. TV.com had the scoop –

Texting me from WonderCon, a very good friend of mine (@PaulBurrows) just left the Showrunners Panel at [WonderCon]. A panel member, non other than Rockne O’Bannon, the co-creator ofWarehouse 13, Defiance, and Revolution… who was also Farscape’s creator and showrunner – has indeed CONFIRMED a Farscape movie is happening.

There was a bit of followup from SpoilerTV with a quote from O’Bannon as to who is actually working on the screenplay –

Yeah, yeah it’s the worst kept secret…We’re far from production, but yeah, the first step is Justin [Monjo] working on a script for us. We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Monjo worked on the original series, authoring nine episodes.

It should be noted that O’Bannon’s second quote is much more tempered in its enthusiasm and probably more in line with realistic expectations. It is a long road from having a script to getting it greenlit for production and there have been many projects who have started out on that journey but who have never reached the destination. Will a Farscape movie be able to succeed where others haven’t? We’ll be watching.
