Steve Carell will be headlining the cast of The Priority List, an adaptation of David Menasche living with cancer memoir The Priority List: A Teacher’s Final Quest to Discover Life’s Greatest Lessons.
Warner Brothers has acquired the rights to the book with Carell also attached to produce along with his production partners Charlie Hartsock and Vance DeGeneres.
The book chronicles Menasche’s 2006 diagnosis of brain cancer and how the Miami high school teacher went on to go past the doctors’ belief that he only had a few months to live thanks to several surgeries and chemotherapy. After a seizure in 2012 forced him to retire from teaching, he went on to travel cross country to reconnect with several of students from his 15-year teaching career.
Although the actor has had a few roles that had a dramatic component, this would be his first full-on non-comedic role. Now sometimes comics reaching for serious dramatic weight can fall short, but I’ve liked Carell when he’s taken these more dramatic turns so I am interested in seeing how this turns out.
