BIRDS Remake Has Found Director

Birds

It may take a lot of hubris to step into the shoes of Alfred Hitchcock, but Universal thinks they’ve found the guy. Dutch director Diederik van Rooijen has been hired to helm the studio’s planned remake of the Hitchcock classic The Birds. This will be van Rooijen’s first Hollywood film.

This wouldn’t be the first time that Hitchcock’s classic has been mined. A direct-to-cable “sequel” was made back in 1994 and was greeted with near universal pans and jeers. In 2007, Platinum Dunes and Mandalay Pictures, the two groups who are bankrolling this new attempt, announced that director Martin Campbell and actress Naomi Watts had been attached to a remake of the film. Dennis Iliadis replaced Campbell in late-2009 after Campbell had been unable to come up with a new angle on the material.

So does van Rooijen have an idea that could make this remake better than Birdemic: Shock And Awe? I remain skeptical.
