Mike Newell has been signed to direct a new version of The Day Of The Triffids.
Neil Cross has already turned in his screenplay adapting of John Wyndham’s classic science-fiction novel that tells the story of how a passing comet leaves a majority of the world blind with the small number of sighted people left to defend the world against an invasion of the alien, plant-like triffids.
Previously, the book was adapted for film in 1962 with Steve Sekely directing and twice for television by the BBC, first in 1981 and again in 2009. Fans of the novel don’t consider the 1962 film version to be a particular faithful retelling of the story, with special criticism leveled on how the novel’s original downbeat ending was considerably changed. It will be interesting to see how Cross and Newell approach the material.
