What do Batman, Captain America, Iron Man and Wonder Woman have in common? Well, besides the fact that they are all comic book characters, that is. The answer: there has been more than one person operating under that heroic identity in the comics. Yes, even Batman. You might think he’s always been Bruce Wayne, but there have been at least two other men to take up the mantle of the bat in the comics.
Having one character replace another in the role of a particular hero is a popular trope in comics and even a character as minor as Ant-Man is not immune from it. Three men have held the name and powers of Ant-Man in the comics–Hank Pym in the 1960s, Scott Lang starting in the 1970s, and Eric O’Grady in the 2000s. As the Ant-Man film approaches, fans are wondering which version Paul Rudd will be playing when the film hits the big screen. Director Edgar Wright might have just given us a big hint.
Yesterday, the director tweeted the above image. Through some detective work from ComingSoon.net, we have found out that it was a screen cap from an episode of the animated Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes series. It was from an episode called “To Steal an Ant-Man,” which loosely adapted the origin of the Scott Lang Ant-Man. In the comics, Scott Lang stole Hank Pym’s technology in order to save daughter life.
Wright tweeting this image might be the first official indication that Scott Lang will be the protagonist in the film, something the director has been hinting at since at least as far back as 2006. Of course, it could just be his way of letting us know Ant-Man was recently on TV. Time will tell.
