Gal Gadot Speaks Out On WONDER WOMAN Body Criticism

gadot wonder womanMuch like any superhero casting, Gal Gadot’s casting as Wonder Woman in Batman vs. Superman generated a lot of criticism that she wasn’t right for the part. And these criticisms weren’t just about her rather limited acting resume. Much of the criticism pertained to her not being the physical ideal for the role. Now Gadot, in her first interview since being cast, addresses some of these criticisms.

Batman News has a translation of an interview Gadot did with the Israeli talk show, Good Evening with Gai Pines, and in that interview, the actress is asked about the casting controversy and what she is going to do about easing fans’ concerns:

It’s been said that you’re too skinny for the part. Wonder Woman is large-breasted, is that going to change?

Hmm. I represent the Wonder Woman of the new world. Breasts… anyone can buy for 9,000 shekels and everything is fine. By the way, Wonder Woman is amazonian, and historically accurate amazonian women actually had only one breast. So, if I’d really go “by the book”…it’d be problematic.

So you’re not going to gain a little weight and start eating carbs before filming begins?

It’s the physical preparations that I’m starting now. A very serious training regimen – Kung Fu, kickboxing, swords, jujutsu, Brazilian…1,000 and 1 things…I’ll gain body mass.

That first question is problematic on a number of levels. I don’t think the criticism about her appearance was ever aimed at Gadot’s breast size. Well, at least mine wasn’t. And if people really were criticizing her for not having as big a bosom as a comic book character, the sheer idiocy of the comparison is enough to allow you to ignore it. No human being can compare with the exaggerated figures drawn in the comics. Hugh Jackman comes close, but still…

However, Gadot’s response leads me to believe that she’s reading the wrong source material for the part. Yes, the Amazons of myth were warrior women who would cut off a breast to make shooting a bow and arrow that much easier, and that myth does inspire the Amazons of Wonder Woman’s world, the two mythologies are completely different. If Gadot is using the real world myth of the Amazon as inspiration, then her body shape is the least of our worries.

Gadot does redeem herself with her second answer. That is the program you’d expect a actor playing a superhero to go under, male or female. She’ll probably come out of that training looking like an Amazon warrior.
