It appears that Joe Wright’s Peter Pan origin film Pan is hitting the fast track towards production. Wright only signed on to the project last week and we already have word as to who may be under consideration to head up the film’s villainous pack of pirates.
Deadline is reporting that Javier Bardem – one of the go-to guys for speculating about movie bad guy roles – has been offered the lead role for the film.
Interestingly, according to Deadline’s story, the role is not that of the traditional Peter Pan villain of Captain Hook, but that of historical pirate Blackbeard. Which I think actually hints at a way that the film will possibly end, with a member of Blackbeard’s crew loosing his hand and then rising up to take command after Blackbeard’s demise.
Now this version of the Peter Pan story titled Pan should not be confused with the screenplay of the same title that appeared on the 2006 Black List. In that version, written by Ben Magid, Hook is a modern day police detective investigating a string of child kidnappings and his only lead is a young woman who escaped the clutches of the kidnapper fifteen years earlier by the name of Wendy.
Wright will be directing from a screenplay by Jason Fuchs.
