Stephen Lang Confirmed Returning For AVATAR Sequels

I have a feeling that death isn’t too permanent in the world of James Cameron’s Avatar.

A while back, Sigourney Weaver confirmed that she would be back for the director’s planned followups to his blockbuster science-fiction epic despite her character not surviving to see the film’s closing credits. Now it turns out another actor whose character met a fatal end will also be returning for the sequels.

Deadline is reporting that Stephen Lang, the villainous Colonel Quaritch will be seen again in the new films. They also have a quote from Cameron about the actor and his character’s return.

Steven was so memorable in the first film, we’re privileged to have him back. I’m not going to say exactly how we’re bringing him back, but it’s a science fiction story, after all. His character will evolve into really unexpected places across the arc of our new three-film saga. I really look forward to working with such a gifted actor, who’s also become a good friend.

Given what we’ve seen so far of the world of Pandora in the first Avatar film, one could probably make some educated guesses as to how Weaver and Lang’s characters return. And that’s before considering such mundane options such as flashbacks or prequels.

Cameron will be setting to work with his cast to films Avatars 2-4 early next year. Currently he was working with screenwriters Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Shane Salerno on firming up the scripts for the films.
