Disney Developing CRUELLA DE VIL Live Action Film

CruellaDeVille

Disney must have some confidence in their upcoming live-action film centering on Sleeping Beauty villain Maleficent, as they have started development on a similar-themed movie exploring another one of their animated antagonists – 101 Dalmations‘ Cruella De Vil.

Sieny has hired screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna to penn the project, currently simply titled Cruella. McKenna has already had some experience writing this type of character having scripted The Devil Wears Prada. She also worked on Disney’s new adaptation of the musical Annie, which is currently casting. The storyline for Cruella is currently being kept under tight wraps.

This won’t be the first time that the villainous vamp has been brought to life on the big screen. Devil Wears Prada star Glen Close played her in the 1996 live action adaptation of the classic animated film as well as its 2000 sequel.

The project is just the latest in a series of films from Disney that raid their animated classics for live action projects. In addition to next year’s Maleficent, the studio has a new version of Cinderella and a second Alice In Wonderland film in the production pipeline.

And given that the band has recently reunited for a short series of concerts, I guess this is as good a reason as any to share The Replacements’ cover of the Cruella De Vil song from Disney’s 1988 album Stay Awake: Various Interpretations of Music from Vintage Disney Films.
