Will Smith In Talks To Return For INDEPENDENCE DAY 2

It looks like Will Smith might get a second chance to whip ET’s ass after all.

Despite word from Roland Emmerich last June that Will Smith would not be returning for Independence Day 2, the director told Digital Spy today that Smith is in talks over a possible appearance in the sequel to the film that launched his career into the stratosphere. We can speculate on Smith’s change of heart, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the recent box office disappointment of this summer’s After Earth had something to do with it.

Also in the interview, Emmerich casts doubt on studio Twentieth Century Fox’s announced release window of 2015 for Independence Day 2, saying that it would more than likely come out the following year. And honestly, given how crowded 2015 is looking, that might not be such a bad thing.

You can view the video interview below for all of what Emmerich had to say about the sequel, as well as a follow up to another of his 1990s science-fiction films, Stargate.
