Comic Amy Schumer’s career has been on the rise over the last couple of years. With a few television appearances, including a season on the reality contest Last Comic Standing, she seemed to explode into the public’s consciousness with her appearance on the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen in 2011. That appearance has lead to a hit sketch series on Comedy Central and now it looks as if she is lining up her first starring role in a feature film.
Deadline is reporting that Universal has optioned an untitled script that the comic has been writing as a star vehicle for herself. The project will be produced through Judd Apatow’s Apatow Productions shingle at the studio. Apatow is no slouch when it comes to female-lead comedy having produced Kiristen Wiig’s hit Bridesmaids and Lena Dunham’s HBO series Girls. He is reportedly working with Schumer on the development of the screenplay.
Honestly, I find this to be exciting news. Not only is Schumer a great stand up – I saw her in New York last March where she killed the room – but her Comedy Central show has served as a great showcase of her comic acting skills. If they can translate into film, it looks as if Universal may have a future hit on their hands.
Hella yeah!
