J J Abrams is known to be a demanding director who likes to develop his material at his own pace, so when he was announced as the director of Disney’s Star Wars: Episode VII, I was a bit surprised. Disney had already announced an intended summer 2015 release date for the first film of the resurrected Star Wars franchise and I believed that Abrams would chafe against the deadline. Even Abrams hinted that could be the case. And now it is looking as if that might become reality.
Badass Digest’s Devin Faraci is reporting that they are continuing to hear rumors that Abrams is on the verge of dropping out of Episode VII, possibly in favor of returning to the Star Trek franchise for its third installment. Faraci cites Disney’s insistence on shooting the film in England against his wishes as just one of the reasons that might fuel his departure.
All eye are now on Disney’s D23 Expo coming up in a few weeks. The studio will definitely be planning some sort of Star Wars presentation and if Abrams is a no-show, it probably won’t be a good sign.
