Kristen Wiig will be headlining the Will Ferrell-produced indie comedy Welcome To Me. Wiig will be playing a self-involved woman with dissociative personality disorder who, according to Deadline, wins the lottery and uses the proceeds to launch a cable access show about herself. Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Robbins and Linda Cardellini have also been cast in the film which has been written by Eliot Laurence will be directed by Shira Piven.
It is a bit surprising that this movie is being produced independently. After Wiig made such a splash with Bridesmaids in 2011, it seemed as if all the studios were making noises about wanting to make more female-oriented comedies. While we have seen a few, it is still nowhere near the level of male-oriented comedies we continue to see. And I have no doubt that if a studio had purchased this script it still would have landed Wiig to star. I do realize that I am presuming that the script was indeed shopped to studios before it wound up with Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Productions. But whatever the circumstances it is nice to see that at least someone is interested in getting a female-fronted comedy onto the big screen.
