Sadra Bullock is in talks to join the new film adaptation of the Broadway hit Annie. She will be joining Beasts Of The Southern Wild star Quvenzhane Wallis as the titular poor little rich girl and Jamie Foxx as her billionaire adoptive father, renamed Benjamin Stacks from the original comic strip’s Daddy Warbucks.
Bullock will be playing Miss Hannigan, the evil operator of the orphanage where we first find Annie living. Once Warbucks/Stacks takes an interest in adopting Annie, Hannigan and her con-man brother “Rooster” see it as a way to swindle the billionaire out of some big bucks. Carol Burnett played the role in the 1982 film version of the show and more recently Jane Lynch played her for a stretch in the current Broadway revival.
This is not the first time that Bullock has flirted with the role. She was in talks to join the cast back in March, but passed at the time. I’m not sure who blinked and came back to the table first.
I have to admit that when I first saw that Bullock was in talks for the film, I thought she would be playing Daddy Warbucks/Stacks’ assistant Grace, a nice part, especially if they play up her crush on her employer. Now the cruel Miss Hannigan is the much meatier part, and it is nice to see that Bullock would want to be seen as the villain of the film when the public is so used to seeing her in a more favorable light.
