Although she was director James Ponsoldt’s first choice to headline his Hillary Rodham Clinton biopic Rodham, Carey Mulligan has passed on the project. The Hollywood Reporter is stating that even after having met with Ponsoldt last week, the actress was “not prepared to commit to the role at this time.”
Mulligan headed up the list of possible stars for the film, placing above the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone. While I like all three, I am not sure that any of them have the right presence or acting chops to play the role.
Currently, Ponsoldt is working with writer Young Il Kim on a director’s draft of the 2012 Black List screenplay but will not presumably have to divide his time between that and resuming his search for a lead for the film. Considering what a juicy part the role is, I am sure that actresses are already lining up to meet with him.
