Captain America: The Winter Soldier has gained another villain in the form of UFC fighter Georges St-Pierre. The Welterweight Champion will be playing the french super bad guy Batroc the Leaper.
Batroc the Leaper? Really?
For those unfamiliar with the character, Batroc is a costumed mercenary who is skilled in the martial art known as savate. Although he was portrayed as an accomplished fighter his French accent often seemed, to this Marvel Comics reader at least, to be overwritten to the point of ridiculous, although in recent years it has seemed to be written a bit more realistically.
But I have to express some surprise that the character is appearing in Winter Soldier. The film already has its titular villain in the form of actor Sebastian Stan, while Frank Grillo has been cast to play the mercenary Crossbones. Add in the fact that Toby Jones is set to return as the Nazi scientist Armin Zola and we already have a pretty packed roster of bad guys for the film.
St-Pierre, has previously appeared in two martial arts films directed by Hector Echavarria, Death Warrior and Never Surrender.
Filming on Captain America: The Winter Soldier is expected to start later this spring for a April 4, 2014 release.
