Fede Alvarez’s remake of the cult classic horror film Evil Dead screened this weekend at the SXSW festival and the online reaction seems to be fairly positive if not downright enthusiastic. And if general audience’s share that enthusiasm, Sony wants to make sure that it is ready to give them more. At the SXSW screening Evil Dead producer, and star of the original film, Bruce Campbell, announced that there is already work being done on a sequel and going so far as to suggest that the rebooted franchise will grow to a trilogy.
There are no other specifics as to what direction this mooted sequel will go in, but I rather think it will continue in the straight horror vein rather than veering off into the slapstick comedy area that the original Evil Dead 2 veered towards. I would imagine that a sequel would try to push the same ratings boundaries that the current film hit, forcing a quick edit in order to get it down to an R rating from its initially awarded NC-17.
