It is looking as if Peter Parker’s life is about to become more complicated. Variety is reporting that director Marc Webb is looking to add the character of Mary Jane Watson to the cast of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and that Shailene Woodley, who was seen in last year’s The Descendents, as the “leading choice” to play opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy in the superhero sequel.
Also making the rounds today is a rumor that Webb and company is considering Electro for the villain of the sequel.
Longtime fans of the Spider-Man comics know that Gwen Stacey meets a rather unfortunate end, but before that happens she and Mary Jane become rivals for the affections of Peter. So how much the films will remain true to the comics remains to be seen, but I wouldn’t hold out too much hope that Stone will be around too much longer.
Electro, with his ability to shoot electricity from his hands, is an old school Spidey villain who has been around for decade but hasn’t been brought to the screen previously. He was, however, one of the villains used in James Cameron’s old treatment for the film that was in development before Sam Raimi came on board to create the first Spider-Man film trilogy.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set to start shooting early next year for a May 14, 2014 release so there is plenty of time for casting news and rumors to fly around.
