While the rest of the world awaits comedy troupe Broken Lizard to resolve their financial problem with Twentieth Century Fox so everyone can get on with making Super Troopers 2, Broken Lizard member Jay Chandrasekhar has found a project to fill his time. He will be directing Warner Brothers live action/CG mashup Yogi Bear 2.
Although roasted by critics, the previous Yogi Bear film earned the studio $200 million off of an $80 million budget, so I guess a sequel was inevitable.
Chandrasekhar previously directed Warners big screen adaptation of the 1970s TV series The Dukes Of Hazzard.
As a Broken Lizard fan, I have to admit to some disappointment over the news. Sure I know Chandrasekhar has to eat, but if he is not going to be working on a Broken Lizard film, I would rather at least see him working on some other comedy project. Previously in his down time Chandrasekhar has directed episodes of Freaks And Geeks, Up All Night, Royal Pains and Community.
There may be a bright side to this, though. After Chandrasekhar did Dukes Of Hazzard for Warners, the studio turned around and financed Broken Lizard’s comedy Beerfest. Perhaps there is another quid pro quo deal going here and Warners will bankroll another Broken Lizard script. I guess I can live with that.
