And in the biggest no-brainer story of the week, Marvel Studios has announced officially that the release date for The Avengers 2 has been set for May 1, 2015. This is a confirmation of the date that was reported last week.
It is a no-brainer as the studio had already filled their 2013 and 2014 schedule. Additionally, the studio has traditionally released a movie the first weekend of May in order to coincide with the comics industry-wide Free Comic Book Day initiative.
What is interesting in the announcement from the studio is that they refer to the film as “Marvel’s Avengers Unnamed Sequel.” I’m thinking that there may be a subtitle in the sequel’s future. The Avengers: The Thanos Imperative anyone?
It was also last week Marvel when announced that Avengers director was officially on board to write and direct the follow up as well as help consult on the rest of the films currently on the studio’s slate as well as an untitled television project that they are in the process of developing for ABC.
Avengers 2 is the culmination of Marvel Studios’s “Phase Two” which kicks off with next summer’s Iron Man 3 and continues with Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Ant-Man and Guardians Of The Galaxy across the remainder of 2013 and 2014. Presumably some plot elements for the Avengers sequel will be threaded into these films.
