Hot Tub Time Machine director Steve Pink is in talks with Screen Gems to helm their adaption of the David Mamet play Sexual Perversity In Chicago which had been previously brought to the screen back in 1986 as About Last Night.
The studio is looking for an early fall start so this should be a rather quick negotiation. This would push the start date of the Bad Santa sequel that Pink is also in negotiations for with Dimension into early next year.
This new adaption has been scripted by Bachlorette screenwriter Leslye Headland and is set to star Michael Ealy and Kevin Hart (in the roles played by Rob Lowe and Jim Belushi in the original film version) as Danny and Bernie, two guys navigating the 1970s singles scene. Regina Hall is rumored to be up for the part of Joan, while the role of her best friend and Danny’s romantic interest Debbie has yet to be cast.
The original film version underwent its name change after newspapers reportedly announced that they would refuse to carry advertising for it if it retained Mamet’s original title. It was a move that Mamet disagreed with but could do nothing about. It should be interesting to see if a quarter of a century later this new version will be able to retain its title or if it will have to undergo a similar ignominious fate.
