While American audiences might have first discovered him for his role as the octagenarian nudist bicycle rider in Waking Ned Devine, David Kelly was more than four decades into his stories acting career at the time he starred in that film.
He starred in a number of British films and BBC television series since the 1950s, including shows and miniseries such as Strumpet City, Robin’s Nest and playing O’Reilly the builder in the second episode of the Fawlty Towers series.
Kelly was nominated for a Screen Actor’s Guild Award for his performance in Waking Ned Devine. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Irish Film and Television Awards, the same year he starred as Uncle Joe in Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Kelly’s last role was as a spry wall guard in 2007’s Stardust.
