KITCHEN SINK Gets New Director

Robbie Pickering has been hired to direct Sony Pictures’ The Kitchen Sink. Previously, Pickering wrote and directed the indie film Natural Selection, which was nominated for an Independent Spirit award. Originally, Jonah Hill had been considering the project for his directorial debut but has since moved on.

The 2010 Black List script by Oren Uziel tells the story of a zombie outbreak that is interrupted by an alien invasion forcing a normal high school kid, a teenage vampire and a zombie to fight together for survival. Given all the elements in that short description, it’s pretty hard not to see where the title for the film came from.

I read the draft that landed the script on the Black List and found it roundly entertaining. It is acutely aware of the absurdity of its premise and has fun playing with it. But there is also a nice emotional arc for its teen hero that should give the story some heft beyond the action and comedy.
