San Diego Comic Con 2011 Film Panel Schedule

It’s about that time again. Time for the San Diego Comic Convention. The criticism of the con is that it has become less a comic con and more a movie con. As the list of panels below indicates, that criticism might be justified.

The below is a list of every movie related panel being put up at Comic-Con. This includes workshops, comic book panels that deal with films, and behind the scenes panels as well as the promotional panels you have come to expect. If you are going to comic con and love movies, there is bound to be something here that will be to your liking.

For each day, we’ll point out what we think are a few highlights. But before we do, here are some general points to keep in mind:

  • Go early if you want to see your panel: There is no clearing of the rooms in between panels. For the big halls such as Hall H and Ballroom 20, this means if you want to see a panel at 3 pm, you’ll probably have to camp out the night before. Seriously. I am not joking. Even for panel put in smaller rooms, you should think of arriving at least a half hour before hand. Remember, you’ll only be let in if someone leaves. Take that into consideration.
  • The convention is huge: It used to be hard to get from one panel to another when all of the events were in the two-tiered convention center itself. Now, panels and screening are being presented at the neighboring hotels, the Hilton and the Marriot. Keep in mind that it will be almost impossible to get from one panel in one location to another panel starting any less than a half hour later in another venue.
  • Plan ahead and have back-ups: You will probably have a panel you wanted to see that you will not get into. Luckily, there are a lot of interesting panels that run concurrently. If you have something to fall back on, you should enjoy the show that much more.
  • Take a chance on something under the radar: Everyone wants to go to the Amazing Spider-Man panel. But there are also panels on storyboarding and scoring films that might be even more interesting to film buffs. Broaden your horizons.

Now, to the list:

Thursday, July 21

Highlights:

  • FilmDistrict Studio Panel: This studio put out the much acclaimed and buzzed about film, Insidious. Might be interesting to see if they are a one trick pony.
  • 20th Century Fox Panel: The content is TBA, but you can probably assume that The Rise of the Planet of the Apes, In Time, the Star Wars 3-D releases, Prometheus and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter will be covered. Maybe more, maybe less, but there’s enough films on that list that’s worth a look.
  • Entertainment Weekly: The Visionaries: A discussion with Jon Favreau and Guillermo del Toro on the Future of Pop Culture: The Entertainment Weekly panels are always solid, and these two men are nothing but interesting.
  • Writing Movies for Fun and Profit: Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant are funny as heck, and their “how-to” book is slightly different than the norm.

Whether you’re shooting your first cyberpunk short or that story about the leather-clad girl who hunts aliens, this course will take you from script to final product so that you too can enter your own movie into the CCI-IFF. This first class covers the specifics of preproduction on the cheap, including screenwriting, casting, scheduling, location scouting, crewing-up, and getting equipment for nothing. Panelists for the class include Valerie Perez (producer/star of the Paula Peril series), Jack Conway (writer/producer of Fear News), and Sean Rourke (writer of Ballistica). Marriott Hall 2, Marriott Marquis & Marina

11:00-12:00 Obsession: How TV and Movies Go from Fascination to Phenomenon—There are some shows and films that we watch. And there are others that we obsess over. We talk about them at work the next day. We join the fan websites. We wear the T-shirts. But what does it take to turn a series or movie into something special that we can’t live without? This panel from BuddyTV.com examines that topic from all points of view: the writers and producers who create the projects, the actors who star in them, and the fans who consume them. Panelists include Chase Masterson (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Yesterday Was a Lie), Skyler Samuels (The Nine Lives of Chloe King), Allison Dubois (Medium), Mel Lowry (ChuckTV.net, True-BloodTV.net, NiceGirlsTV.com), Karen Bailey (vice president of production, Starz Channel), Zack Stentz (writer, Fringe, Thor, X-Men: First Class), Amy Berg (co-executive producer, Eureka; supervising producer, Leverage), and Deric Hughes and Benjamin Raab (executive story editors, Warehouse 13). Appearing on stage: Rick Baker in conversation with Geoff Boucher of the Los Angeles Times’ Hero Complex. Indigo Ballroom, Hilton San Diego Bayfront

12:45-1:45 Animation Showcase—Sony Pictures Animation plunges Hall H into a 3D animation universe with previews of upcoming films with Aardman, the home studio of Wallace and Gromit, as they make their first trip across the pond to Comic-Con to present a first look at two of their upcoming animated feature films:

Arthur Christmas — The 3D, CG-animated family comedy Arthur Christmas, an Aardman production for Sony Pictures Animation, at last reveals the incredible, never-before seen answer to every child’s question: “So how does Santa deliver all those presents in one night?” The answer: Santa’s exhilarating, ultra-high-tech operation hidden beneath the North Pole. But at the heart of the film is a story with the ingredients of a Christmas classic — a family in a state of comic dysfunction and an unlikely hero, Arthur, with an urgent mission that must be completed before Christmas morning dawns. Producer Peter Lord and co-writer Peter Baynham discuss the animated film.

The Pirates! Band of Misfits — In the 3D, stop motion-animated The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Hugh Grant, stars in his first animated role as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain — a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to theimpossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It’s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Along the way they battle a diabolical queen (Imelda Staunton) and team up with a haplessly smitten young scientist (David Tennant), but never lose sight of what a pirate loves best: adventure! Director/producer Peter Lord will be live on stage to talk about the movie.

The result: Agent MX Z3RO, a 15-minute indie movie that’s meant to be a fun throwback to the ’70s “shoot-em-up” action spy genre — think Eastwood meets Connery. Why’d they do it? Meet the director/writer, producer/writer, film editor, and sound supervisor who created the film.
