Is A Pee Wee Herman Film Close To A Green Light?

When we last heard from actor/comedian Paul Ruebens, he was working on a screenplay for a new film featuring his Pee Wee Herman persona. Collaborating with him on the project was writer/actor Paul Rust with none other than Judd Apatow serving as producer on the proposed project.

If you’ve been wondering how things have been going on that project, Ruebens has told the Hollywood Reporter that he and Rust have just turned in the script to Apatow. Ruebens also elaborated on how Apatow helped shape the screenplay –

He’s bringing such an interesting side to it. He’s constantly having us talk about and address the emotional core of Pee-wee Herman. It’s adding a dimension I never had before. Judd, if you’re reading this, I think it’s ready to green light!

I have to say that although I am not much of a fan of the Pee Wee Herman character, I am intrigued by the idea of Apatow helping Ruebens and Rust to bring a deeper characterization to Pee Wee. But will fans warm to the idea of a more fleshed out or humanized version of Pee Wee? Apatow seems to think so. I just remains to be seen whether a studio will agree with him.
