Sony Picks Up Rights To Dark ‘Little Mermaid’ Novel

Sony had found themselves a potential new entry into the recent spate of fairy tales getting the big screen treatment from Hollywood. Yesterday, the studio announced that they have acquired the rights to Carolyn Turgeon’s book Mermaid: A Twist on the Classic Tale.

The studio has picked up the book for Country Strong filmmaker Shana Feste to write and direct.

Turgeon’s book recasts the original story into a love triangle with a handsome prince who must choose between a mermaid who has given up everything to be with him and a princess to whom marriage would put a stop to an ongoing war between their two kingdoms.

Not having read the novel, I suppose that there is an interesting story here. However, assigning the project to the writer/director of the fairly awful Country Strong does not inspire much confidence.
