Yvette Vickers, the actress who appeared in such cult films such as Attack Of The 50-Foot Woman and Attack Of The Giant Leeches, was found dead in her Benedict Canyon, CA home on April 27. Her body was discovered by a neighbor who had noticed that the mail in the actress’s mailbox was old and starting to turn yellow. Authorities stated that the condition of her remains suggest that she could have been dead for at least a year. She was 82.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Yvette majored in picture and theater arts at UCLA for three years before launching a modeling career. Her first film role was a small role in the 1950 classic Sunset Boulevard which went uncredited. Her career both blossomed and waned through the 1950s with appearances in Attack of the 50-Foot Woman (1958) and Attack of the Giant Leeches (1959)marking her biggest roles.
In 1959 she appeared in the July issue of Playboy as their Playmate of the Month in a photo lay out shot by future director Russ Meyer. Although she also did some sporadic television work, her last two film appearances – in Paul Newman’s Hud (1963) and the low budget horror flick Evil Spirits (1990) – are separated by almost three decades.
