Marvel Studios honcho Kevin Feige recently stated that this May’s release of Thor is the studio’s superhero film franchise’s first step “into [the cosmic Marvel Universe] and from there, anything’s possible.” Well, it’s looking like their second step will be just a few months later with the release of Captain America: The First Avenger on July 22.
In the film, Chris Evans will star as the star-spangled avenger fighting Nazis and the villainous Red Skull, being played by Hugo Weaving. And thanks to a poster in Superherohype’s forums, we have a look at a picture that appears in the latest issue of the UK’s SFX magazine showing Weaving holding a particular object that should be familiar to many comics readers – the Cosmic Cube.
For those who don’t know, the Cosmic Cube is a device that contains energies that allows its users to manipulate the fabric of reality. Needless to say that you wouldn’t want it in the hands of someone like the Red Skull. Reports state that the Cube will be renamed “the Tesseract” for the movie, but will pretty much function as the same thing as its four-color counterpart. Granted, the Cube that Weaving is holding looks pretty much like a lump of plastic, so I’m assuming (hoping) that there will be some visual effects wizardry to give it a more powerful demeanor.
