If you’ve been wondering who was going to be replacing the departing Robert Downey Jr in Alfonso Cuaron’s science-fiction thriller Gravity, wonder no further. George Clooney will be stepping into the spacesuit vacated by Downey as an astronaut stranded in space with Sandra Bullock.
Downey left the project last month, after the project had been delayed numerous times while Cuaron searched for a new female lead after originally-attached actress Angelina Jolie dropped out last spring. Since that time Marion Cotillard, Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively and Natalie Portman have all had various flirtations with the project until Bullock was signed.
It now looks as if Gravity will go in front of cameras this spring, after Clooney wraps up his directorial chores on The Ides Of March with Paul Giamatti and Ryan Gosling.
Since the character Clooney will be playing is definitely one in a supporting position to Bullock’s lead, I’m a bit surprised that Clooney signed up for the film. It’s an interesting choice for both him and the film makers to make. Hopefully for Cuaron’s sake this is the last of the casting changes.
