After finally landing itself a leading lady, Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron is going to have to go back into casting session. This time he will be looking for a leading man for his science-fiction thriller as the previously attached Robert Downey Jr has dropped out of the project.
There’s no word as to why Downey dropped out, but it could be his busy schedule, as was speculated last month. Currently Downey is wrapping up work on Sherlock Holmes 2 before heading off to do The Avengers next February and Sam Raimi’s Oz, The Great And Powerful next summer. He is also attached to Iron Man 3, a bio-pic about Edgar Allen Poe and a big screen adaptation of the 1970s series Emergency!, though all three projects are not scheduled yet.
I can’t say that this comes as much of a surprise. The role in Gravity is definitely that of second banana to the female lead and it didn’t seem likely that an actor of his standing would take a smaller role than he has had in the past several years.
