He may not have a distributor yet, but Kevin Smith has just finished filming his political horror thriller Red State and he already has the film edited. He also has a teaser poster for the film, which you can see below. (Click on it for a much larger version.)
As Smith explains on his blog –
This poster was created by [Red State producer Jon Gordon’s] assistant, Melissa Bloom. This isn’t the work of some gun for hire who’s doing six other campaigns; we’re not just one of many. The marketer is actually family, Red from pre-production all the way through wrap, so she’s got an insight into the flick that no ad agency could ever boast (not even one-time Glo-Coat golden boy Don Draper over at SCDP). I’ll take passion over pedigree any day.
When we first looked at Melissa’s poster, someone said “You should give this to the ad agency as a guideline.” Guideline? Was an ad agency gonna make us any happier than Melissa’s image made us?
I have to admit that it sounds like Smith has been energized by the process of making this low-budget ($4 million) film after working as a director-for-hire on the studio film Cop Out, which was met with what could charitably be called mixed-reviews.
