It is not often that one sees the name “David Lynch” in the same sentence with the word “sequel.” It is not that the iconic director’s works don’t make enough at the box office to warrant a revisit to his films so much as that once he has explored certain themes in a picture, he moves on to another film to explore new and different ideas.
So imagine my surprise that Mulholland Drive star Laura Harring has stated to NBC Miami that she feels that the iconoclastic director is preparing to revisit that film-
“I’m very sure it’s coming, it’s being born,” she said. “I cannot really tell you how I know.”
I suppose we can take this news with a bit of a grain of salt until we get some actual confirmation from Lynch’s camp. And as Lynch is fairly tight-lipped about his projects in development, I don’t expect it anytime soon. And even if he were working on a follow-up to his 2001 psychological thriller, what form would it take, given that film fans have discussed and debated its plot twists and meaning.
As you may know, Mulholland Drive originally started life as a pilot for a potential television series at ABC. The network was hoping that Lynch could somehow deliver something that would be as intriguing as his previous series Twin Peaks. But I think that a revisit to the mysteries of that northwestern town would probably be more welcome to the director’s fans than a second drive down Mulholland.
