Jason Segel has signed to be the human star of the upcoming, untitled Muppet film. The announcement comes as no surprise as he co-wrote the project’s screenplay with Nicholas Stoller, his director on the comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Although Disney is trying to keep the plot underwraps, Segel will be playing a someone who sets out to reunite the Muppets so they can stop an evil oil tychoon from tearing down their old theater in order to drill for oil underneath.
Segel has been vocal about his love of the muppets, to the point where he wrote a puppet musical number to be performed by his Forgetting Sarah Marshall character in that film. There’s no doubt in my mind that Segal scripted the part with himself in mind.
James Bobbin, co-creator/writer/director of HBO’s Flight Of The Conchords is set to direct though no start date for production has been scheduled.
