“George Lucas raped my childhood.”
Hyperbolic? Sure. But it served as a rallying cry for old-school Star Wars fans to voice their complaint over the direction of director Lucas’ prequel trilogy to the landmark original three films. Such was the hatred and anger in the fan community that Lucas bashing quickly became its own cottage industry. It also polarized Star Wars fans into who described their opponents as either “Haters” or “Apologists.”
Now comes the documentary The People Vs. George Lucas, a documentary that looks at Star Wars fans and their relationship with both the Star Wars movies and their creator. From what we see in the trailer below, it looks like the movie is not a snarky take on its subject like Trekkies was, which is a good thing. Star Wars fans and their relationship to the prequels have been mined pretty well for humor already, from Clerks: The Animated Series and South Park to the recently released Fanboys.
How deep the film, slated for a 2010 release, will dig remains to be seen, but it certainly has my interest piqued. In the meantime, you can check out the film’s website here.
