While we don’t normally put much stock in the celebrity gossip sites, every now and then they do manage to cough up an intriguing bit of news. Case in point, the below picture from Flawed Hollywood of Eva Longoria taken this past Friday as she exited the office of Marvel Studios. But take a close look at what reading material she has with her. It looks like an Avengers comic. (Actually, it looks like a New Avengers comic, though I’ve been having trouble finding the exact issue.)
I think in this case it is afir to assume that Longoria is at least in talks with the studio about appearing in their planned adaptation of the superhero team comic set for summer of 2011.
But in what role? The most obvious answer is that of Janet Van Dyne, aka The Wasp, one of the founding members of the Avengers. In the comics she is presented as a wealthy and beautiful socialite, a part that sounds fairly ready made for Longoria. Of course, there is the Russian spy The Black Widow, who Longoria bares a resemblance to as well.
With anywhere from 12 to 18 months to go before cameras start rolling on The Avengers, it may be too early to call Longoria’s participation in the film a lock. But at least we know that Marvel is hard at work on getting the best cast they can.
