Universal is going back to the 1970s Saturday morning TV well. The studio already has a remake of the cult favorite Land Of The Lost ready to hit screens next summer and now the studio has just signed a deal to bring another favorite from the stable of shows created by Land Of The Lost producers Sid & Marty Krofft- Sigmund And The Sea Monsters.
Variety has announced that stand-up comic turned Simpsons staff writer Dana Gould has been signed to script the adaptation of the story of a misfit sea monster who is befriended by two California kids. No director has been attached to the project.
For those of you who didn’t grow up in the 70s, Sid and Marty Krofft were a powerhouse of children’s enetertainment television, with a host of shows that often featured characters realized in outlandish, but often cheap looking, costumes. The Kroffts have a host of properties that could be developed, but I’m surprised that Sony went with Sigmund. I can only imagine that they view it as something that could match the comedic adventure tone they’re shooting for with next summer’s Land Of The Lost adaptation. Still, it is certainly not one of the stronger properties in the Kroffts’ stable. I would think something like Dr. Shrinker or Electra Woman And Dyna Girl would be better suited.
Now if only they would bring BIGFOOT & WILDBOY to the screen! Ba-yabbbaaa!!
