New Releases: August 20

1. The Rocker (2,700 Theaters, 102 Minutes, Rated PG-13): Okay, this whole releasing movies on Wednesday thing has got to stop I mean, really, did this film really need to open today? What, did they want to give moviegoers two extra days not to buy tickets?

The film focuses on a 40-something loser who missed out on rock ‘n roll stardom when he was kicked out of a band that went on to find Billboard success. He gets a second chance through becoming the drummer for his nephew’s high school band.

This movie reeks of being one where the writers thought the concept itself was so funny that they didn’t need to bother about an interesting plot or well-defined characters. I could be wrong, but what I’ve seen, that’s what it looks like.

I will give them this. The publicity stunt of Rainn Wilson “kidnapping” his Office cast mate Jenna Fischer and holding her ransom until this film makes $18.7 million at the box office is brilliant. I only hope the film makes it.
