With the countdown until its premier at t-minus 365 days, director Zack Snyder has released the first official photos of the superheroes of Watchmen over at the film’s production blog.
And man, for the most part, I am digging what I am seeing. (To see more of each photo, click on it to enlarge.)
The Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) looks as if he’s hopped right out of the pages of the classic graphic novel to shove that gun into your face. This cinematic version of Owl Man (Patrick Wilson) visually comments on the film version of Batman in a manner similar to the way that the comic’s version of Owl Man did on his four-color counterpart. Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley)definitely looks like someone you not only don’t want to meet in a dark alley, you probably don’t want to meet him in a brightly lit one either. For that matter Silk Spectre (Malin Akerman) looks as if she’d hand you your head on a platter if you tried to make a rude comment on her outfit.
The only character I’m not really digging is the Ozymandus (Matthew Goode). Perhaps it is the muted look of the photo, but the costume just looks off to me. The blues and purples of the costume should pop more, similar to the ancient Egyptian art that inspired it.
A lot of fans of the graphic novel, myself included, have been casting a wary at the film, uncertain that it could be translated to the big screen in a way that remains faithful to the source material. Of course, that just makes it like every other film that adapts a story from another medium. But from what we have seen so far, I’m beginning to have my apprehension give away to anticipation.
