The long-rumored remake of the Shaw Brothers kung fu classic Five Deadly Venoms looks as if it finally has a start date, according to a story in the Beijing News. The film, being financed by director Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs trilogy) and set to be directed by Kirk Wong (Crime Story), will go before the cameras at the end of October.
Featured in the new film’s cast are Maggie Q (Live Free Or Die Hard), Edison Chen (Infernal Affairs trilogy), Wang Lee-hom (Ang Lee’s upcoming Lust, Caution), Jackie Wu Jing (SPL, aka Kill Zone) and Gordon Liu (Kill Bill). Dion Lam (Spiderman 2) will oversee the martial arts choreography.
The original, directed by Shaw Borthers Studio stalwart Cheh Chang told the story of a young martial arts student tasked by his dying master to extract revenge on five treacherous former pupils. The setting for the remake, which will feature Chen as the avenging martial artist and Liu as the dying master, is being updated to the 21st century.
