It has been confirmed that the upcoming DVD release of auteur Stanley Kubrick’s final film Eyes Wide Shut will contain both the R-rated version released in United States theaters plus the more sexually explicit unrated version released just about everywhere else.
DVD News: Unrated EYES WIDE SHUT
The film stars real-life (at the time) husband and wife actors Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman as a married couple whose relationship has grown cold. In a bid to find a way to revitalize their relationship, Cruise’s character goes to an underground sex club, unprepared for what he finds.
In addition to a principal photography period that lasted over a year, the film is probably best remembered for having its sexually graphic content toned for a contractually obligated R rating through the use of computer generated people and objects blocking the offending images in an orgy scene. Since Kubrick passed away at the end of the film’s editing phase, fans and scholars have argued whether this is a change he would have agreed to.
The disc will also contain the 3-part Channel Four documentary The Last Movie: Stanley Kubrick and Eyes Wide Shut, the Lost Kubrick: The Unfinished Films of Stanley Kubrick featurette, an interview gallery featuring Steven Spielberg, Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, theatrical trailers and TV spots, and Kubrick’s 1998 D.G.A. D.W. Griffith Award acceptance speech.
The DVD hits shelves on October 23rd.
