In Remembrance: Sean McClory

     Sean McClory, the Irish character actor best known for his role in John Wayne’s The Quiet Man, has passed away on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 . He was 79.

     Born March 8, 1924 in Dublin, McClory began acting in Galway, Ireland and was a member of the prestigious Abbey Theatre in Dublin.

     RKO studios brought him to the United States in 1947 as a contract player. His first screen appearance went uncredited in Dick Tray’s Dilemma. He slowly worked his way up to larger parts in such films as The Quiet Man, Island in The Sky (1953) and Charade (1953). He also played the homicidal Dublin O’Malley in 1954’s Ring Of Fear. In the late `50s he appeared on the television series The Californians in the role of storekeeper Jack McGivern. In the 1960s he made several television appearances while his movie work waned. Among the series he appeared on where The Virginian, Daniel Boone, The High Chaparral, Mannix, The Outer Limits and Bonanza. His final film role was the 1987 John Huston drama The Dead.
